Glen Oaks – Vitally Important to St. Joseph County’s Future
To the Editor:
I recently had the good fortune of hearing authors James and Deborah Fallows discuss their national bestselling book, “Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into The Heart of America”. Over the course of the past five years, the Fallows have traveled across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of small towns and civic leaders, they detail the 10? traits that separate those that succeed from those that struggle. To quote from their book, “The more often and more specifically we heard people talk about their community college, the better we ended up feeling about the direction of that town.” They concluded that, yes, research universities are essential parts of the U.S. educational system from a global perspective but community colleges – like our very own Glen Oaks - matter most domestically. Historically, community colleges have been very successful preparing students and the local workforce for higher paying jobs. They are absolutely critical to the retention and creation of local and regional jobs, tax base and investment.
On Tuesday, November 6th, I not only encourage but implore you to back our local community college. More importantly, I ask that you cast your vote in support of a wise and smart investment in St. Joseph County’s youth, our elderly, our communities, employees and employers, your neighbors and those that need assistance in realizing a better future for themselves and for their families. Vote “Yes” for Glen Oaks. Vote “Yes” for St. Joseph County’s future!
