More opportunities for senior fitness
To the editor:
When it comes to senior fitness, our county is trying to establish more opportunities for those over the age of 60 to get fit. The current St. Joseph County Commission on Aging staff has been working to establish evidence-based and other exercise classes for all activity levels. So, if you are over the age of 60 and/or have a spouse age 60 or older this information is for you. Become a COA member and attend some of the classes being offered to help you in your fitness journey. Contact the COA at 279-8083 or 1-800-641-9899.
Many of the participants in the current Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program want folks to know the program works. The exercise portion can be done seated or standing, and can be modified to fit most needs. This class is evidence-based and taught by an Arthritis Foundation/AEA Wave certified instructor in Three Rivers and Sturgis. The Three Rivers class is taught to music and we have a fantastic time.
With the termination of some of the classes offered at HealthTRAC, COA Executive Director, Tim Stoll wanted to make sure our seniors still had quality exercise opportunities. In February, “We’ve Got the Beat” Cardio Drumming was established. This group of participants wants everyone to know that the class is available and that it’s a good work out and lots of fun. Please keep in mind that this is not as intense as the Drum Fit classes offered at HealthTRAC. This fun time is for those of us over 60 that have a love of percussion with our exercise! The big exercise balls, buckets, drum sticks, and work out music are all there. The class is taught by a certified group exercise instructor. Since there are currently 15 “drums” available, to participate, call the COA in advance to reserve a “drum.”
In conclusion, there are many exercise classes offered in our county. Seniors thrive in the company of their peers. And some of those peers want you to know, there are quality “senior specific” classes available for you through the COA. So if you don’t think you’re too old to have fun, come join us!
