Vote yes on GOCC millage
To the editor,
I am writing this letter in support of the Glen Oaks Community College’s request for a half a mill, which is on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The structure is 50-years-old and has been maintained as well as an aging facility could be. It is in dire need of new windows and insulation to save on energy costs as well as addressing security and safety issues. In addition, there are infrastructure upgrades needed for plumbing, walls, floors and ceilings.
It is past time to upgrade the college’s information technology infrastructure as well as upgrading the outdated library and auditorium and more importantly classrooms and labs.
This community college has provided a myriad of opportunities for all people in the county young and old alike and has saved many, many families significant dollars when their children have taken classes while still in high school at no cost to them. It is amazing how many students have achieved their associate’s degree from Glen Oaks prior to them receiving their high school diploma! This gives them a head start in continuing their education onto the next level.
Glen Oaks also hosts many of the Career and Technical Education courses for hundreds of students throughout the county, such as automotive, welding, electrical technology and the recent additions to the agriculture program to name a few. It is important that we have folks skilled in these fields as after receiving their certificate can obtain a well-paying job right here in our community. The employers in our county have made it known that they have many job opportunities for skilled laborers and have not been able to fill them.
Please vote yes on November 6th so that we can continue to provide vital educational opportunities for all throughout St. Joseph County.
