‘A banner month’ at Animal Control
CENTREVILLE — During October, St. Joseph County Animal Control adopted out 33 dogs, returned 19 dogs to their owners and adopted out 23 cats.
“It’s been a banner month,” Animal Control Advisory Board member Laura Barley said after hearing kennel manager Bonnie Sachse’s report.
In fact, they’ve even had to turn away some cats as all they have room for is 17. If cats are owner turn-in and housebroken, if they have room, shelter personnel will try to help — including calling owners back when there is an opening, Sachse said.
“We get some beautiful cats,” she added.
Recent positive additions to the shelter area include two large play areas set up by St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department personnel; these include some large outdoor pens purchased with money raised at an Animal Control fundraiser. Most recently, Tom Molter of Three Rivers has donated an agility ramp, six weave posts and a toy pole; he is working on a barrel tunnel.
