‘We’re here for the kids’

36th annual Sturgis Toy Run raises money for children and families in need

STURGIS — Motorcycle enthusiasts from around the region revved their engines and rode around St. Joseph County Saturday, all for a good cause — children and families in need.
The 36th annual Sturgis Toy Run occurred on Saturday, starting at the Cade Lake Campground in Sturgis. Those who participated in the Toy Run could made a monetary donation, with proceeds going to buy toys for children in need in St. Joseph County, or donated toys themselves.
“All our money after we pay our bills goes to the area stores, Walmart, Meijer, and we spend all our money and buy toys the first weekend in December,” Sturgis Toy Run Sergeant-at-Arms Martin Yoder said.
Toy Run President Victor Hargett said after the toys have been bought, they “adopt” families to donate toys to, along with donating to charities, such as the Salvation Army, hospitals, and more around St. Joseph County. Last year, Hargett said, the Toy Run helped 35 families in the county, donating toys and providing help with other necessities, a record.
“Last year, we helped 35 families, we helped the homeless, we helped police departments, the dog kennels, people with utilities, guys with lights getting shut off, busted water pipes, we helped all of them last year,” Hargett said.
