Driver distraction results in accident

PORTER TOWNSNIP — Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at US-12 and Union Road Sunday, Oct. 23 around 3:59 p.m., according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.
Cirila Diaz, 53, of Elkhart, Ind., was distracted by her granddaughter in the back seat. Diaz rear-ended Brian Lloyd, 27, of Elkhart, Ind. Diaz then lost control of her vehicle due to the first accident and drove off the road colliding with a picnic table and a tree.
Lloyd did not suffer any injuries and refused medical treatment. Diaz suffered minor injuries, was cleared by EMS, and refused further medical treatment. The granddaughter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital by SEPSA ambulance.
Seat belts were worn and the child was in approved booster seat. Alcohol was not a factor in this crash.
Porter Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
