Duplex will provide transitional housing for veterans
LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP — Ground has been broken on Schweitzer Road for a duplex that will offer transitional housing for veteran families who are just finishing their term or who are retiring from military service and wanting to move back to St. Joseph County.
“I have a 38-year-old who just retired from the Marine Corps,” said Stoney Summey, St. Joseph County Director of Veterans Affairs as he spoke of the need. “He has three kids and a wife and has to stay with an uncle because he can’t find an apartment to rent.”
Each side of the duplex will have approximately 1,300 square feet and three bedrooms, and will be ADA-accessible.
“This will be a perfect place for a veteran to rent and figure out what he’s going to do” whether that be attending Glen Oaks Community College or building a home near his workplace.
