Familiarity could be a plus for Cats

EDWARDSBURG — Familiarity could favor the Three Rivers Lady Cats’ in this week’s Class B district girls’ basketball tournament at Edwardsburg.
Three Rivers has faced all four teams, all Wolverine Conference members, at least once this season.
Paw Paw and Three Rivers square off at 7 p.m. tonight in the district opener.
The Paw Paw/Three Rivers winner advances to face Vicksburg in Wednesday’s first game at 5:30 p.m. The second contest pits Dowagiac against Edwardsburg at 7 p.m.
The finals are Friday at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Three Rivers Regional Tuesday, March 7 at 5:30 p.m. against the Comstock district champs.
WRCI-FM (97.1) radio station in Three Rivers will broadcast each game as far as the Lady Cats advance. Mark Taylor and Scott Karle will provide the broadcast. Air time tonight is 6:50 p.m.
“Going into the district Edwardsburg is the team to beat. But I think any team on our side of the bracket, us, Paw Paw and Vicksburg feel like they can get to that championship game,” said Three Rivers coach Jason Bingaman.
Three Rivers defeated Paw Paw 46-36 in a Wolverine Conference non-divisional matchup.
Vicksburg beat Three Rivers twice this season 48-41 and 50-31. Paw Paw and Vicksburg split a pair of matchups this season.
“We have as good of a shot if we can just do the little things. That’s what we’ve been trying to stress here late in the season. It’s going to take a great game from anyone to take down Edwardsburg on their home court,” Bingaman said.
“We want to be able to play well this week and be able to give it a shot this Friday if we can. A lot of it comes down to what focus and mentality we want to have out on the court. It will take us playing together on every possession to do that. The stakes are a little higher now.”
Three Rivers freshman forward Hadley Miller leads the team in scoring with 208 points (10.4 average), 159 rebounds (8.0) and 60 steals (3.0) along with 39 assists (1.7).
Senior guard Rhyeli Krause averages 9.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Lady Cats.
Junior guard Arionne Fowlkes is averaging 7.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Junior Diamond Carter averages 2.9 points, four rebounds and 1.3 steals for Three Rivers.
As a team the Lady Cats are averaging 40.5 points and 34.6 rebounds per contest.
Vicksburg’s top scorer is senior guard Layna Steele, along with senior forward Grace Welch and junior forward Lauren Goertler.
Edwardsburg is led by Kaitlyn Zarycki at 15.3 points per game and Savannah Dixon at 12.7.
One of Paw Paw’s top players is Emma Johnson.
