Falcon boys, Sturgis girls collect titles in county cross country meet
THREE RIVERS — Constantine’s boys’ and Sturgis’ girls’ teams raised championship trophies after winning Tuesday’s St. Joseph County Meet in high school cross country.
The Falcon boys scored 50 points to pick off first place in the meet hosted by Three Rivers on its home course at Meyer-Broadway Park.
Sturgis (61) finished second followed by Mendon (63), Three Rivers (85), Centreville (145), Howardsville Christian School (161) and White Pigeon (177).
Sturgis’ girls totaled the lowest score of the day to win their meet with 26 points.
Three Rivers (41) placed second followed by Constantine (95), Centreville (102) and Mendon (108).
The overall winner in the boys’ race was Howardsville Christian School sophomore Dylan Jergens.
Jergens toured the hilly 5,000-meter (3.1 mile) course in a time of 17:48.
Four of Constantine’s top five runners earned a spot on the All-County team and helped solidify the Falcons’ first-place finish.
The top 15 boys and girls finishers earn a spot on the All-County team.
Senior Tim Kinney, a three-time state qualifier, finished second overall for Constantine in a time of 18:31.
The Falcons’ No. 2 runner Sam Warren, a junior, scooped up seventh place in 19:34 followed by teammates Jake Locker (ninth, 19:45) and sophomore Joe Shoup (14th, 20:02).
Three Rivers’ Jon Scare, Cole Appoloni and Nate Adams all earned a spot on the elite team.
Scare, a senior, toured the course in 19:50 to finish 10th followed by Appoloni (12th, 19:53) and Adams (15th, 20:12).
Centreville’s Justus Chupp, an individual state qualifier, snagged third place in 18:43.
Mendon landed three runners on the All-County team.
The Hornets claimed fourth and fifth respectively with Keaton Crotser finishing in 19:13 with Jacob Hagenbuch right behind in 19:23.
Alex Heckman, a senior, from Mendon earned 13th place in 20:02.
