Friendly rivalry has brought Taylor, Horn success in golf, tennis

STURGIS — Perhaps the loudest cheer Erin Taylor hears at today’s Division 3 regional girls’ golf tournament will be from her biggest rival and close friend Katie Horn of Sturgis.
Taylor and Horn, along with their respective teams, tee off at 9:30 a.m. this morning in the 18-hole regional meet being hosted by Sturgis at Island Hills Golf Club in Centreville.
The top three teams, along with the next three individuals, who are not a member of one of the qualifying teams, advance to the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s state tournament on Oct. 20-21 at Forest Akers West Golf Course on the Michigan State University campus.
Both Sturgis and Three Rivers will be looking to qualify as a team for a second consecutive season.
Sturgis advanced to the Division 2 state competition last fall, while Three Rivers qualified in the Division 3 finals, a first in program history.
Both Taylor and Horn, who have both held down the No. 1 position in the lineup for their respective teams the past two seasons, are considered to be among the five best individual golfers in today’s field.
The journey for Taylor and Horn to this point in their high school golf careers has been a fun and interesting one.
