Mendon, C-S renew playoff rivalry

Defensive war expected

CLIMAX — For the sixth straight year, Mendon and Climax-Scotts will meet in the state football playoffs.
Mendon (8-2) visits No. 2-ranked Climax-Scotts (10-0) in a Division 8, Region 4, District 1 championship game at 7 p.m. Friday.
The winner advances to the regional championship Nov. 11 or Nov. 12 against either Morenci (7-3) and Ottawa Lake Whiteford (10-0) who play Friday.
Climax-Scotts has enjoyed a record-breaking season on offense, rushing for a school record 4,000 yards.
Kevin Langs is in his 18th season as Climax-Scotts’ head coach.
Mendon, meanwile, is piloted by first-year head coach Bobby Kretschman.
Kretschman, a former all-state player at Mendon under legendary head coach John Schwartz, is excited about the post season.
The contest is a rematch of last year’s pre-district game won by Climax-Scotts 8-6 on the Panthers’ home field.
Each team is coming off impressive victories in their pre-district matchups last week. Mendon defeated previously unbeaten St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic 39-12, while Climax-Scotts routed Colon 52-7.
Climax-Scotts, champions of the South Central Athletic Association with 51 straight league victories, has outscored opponents 508-85. The Panthers’ closest game this season was a 20-8 win at home over Bark River-Harris, a school from the Upper Peninsula.
The Panthers’ backfield consists of starting senior quarterback Dylan Butler, along with senior tailbacks Noah Eshuis and Adam Schantz.
Schantz has rushed 93 times for 1,407 yards and 29 TDs. Eshuis has 79 carries for 901 yards and eight TDs.
