Mendon faces No. 1 Plymouth Christian in volleyball quarterfinals
CLIMAX — There are no slouches as the Class D state volleyball tournament moves into its final week.
Canton Plymouth Christian Academy (29-10-3) battles Mendon (42-8-6) in a state quarterfinals match Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Climax-Scotts.
The winner advances to Friday’s 3:45 p.m. state semifinal match against the winner of the Buckley quarterfinal between Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart and defending state champion and No. 3-rated Leland.
On the other side of the bracket, Rogers City (honorable mention) meets Crystal Falls Forest Park (honorable mention) in Engadine and No. 6 Auburn Hills Oakland Christian faces Portland St. Patrick at Lake Fenton.
The winners of those two quarterfinals clash at 2 p.m. Friday.
Semifinal winners square off at 10 a.m. in the state championship.
All semifinal and championships matches will be played at the Battle Creek Kellogg Arena.
Plymouth Christian has been the No. 1-ranked team all season, while Mendon has held down the No. 2 spot since the first regular-season rankings came out.
After finishing 9-1 in the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference, Plymouth Christian has dropped just one game in postseason play winning three matches to capture its own district and two in the Morenci Regional, including knocking off No. 4-ranked Lansing Christian 3-1 in the championship.
