MHSAA CROSS COUNTRY FINALS
BROOKLYN — Two area cross country runners earned all-state honors Saturday competing in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 boys’ state finals held at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
Howardsville Christian sophomore Dylan Jergens, along with Mendon junior Keaton Crotser, both finished in the Top 30 to earn the elite honor.
Jergens, a two-time regional champion, met his goal of earning all-state honors after finishing the 5,000-meter (3.1 mile) race with a time of 16:52.7 to earn 16th place.
Crotser finished the race in a time of 17:03.6 that earned him 27th place.
Mendon finished 14th with 377 points in the Division 4 boys’ race.
Crotser earned all-state honors followed by senior Alex Heckman (55th, 17:48.7), senior Jacob Hagenbuch (76th, 18:15.7), junior Connor Henckel (98th, 18:52.7) and senior Garrett Russell (127th, 19:19.2) concluded the Hornets’ scoring.
Also competing for the Hornets were juniors Wyatt Cupp (143rd, 19:33) and Nik Andaverde (165th, 20:21.4).
Carter Surach, a senior from Marcellus, ran a time of 17:32.4 that earned him 50th place.
Centreville senior Justus Chupp finished 61st in a time of 17:39.6.
In the Division 4 girls’ race, Mendon senior Mary Leighton finished 61st with a time of 21:15.
Marcellus finished 27th with a score of 610.
Sophomore Emma Pachay missed earning all-state honors by just two places.
Pachay, who also qualified for state last year as a freshman, finished Saturday’s race in 32nd place with a time of 20:57.3 for coach Dave DeCou’s Wildcats.
Johanna Jager finished in 106th place in a time of 23:12.2 followed by junior Melissa Steinkraus (148th, 24:54.1), sophomore Lexi Bainbridge (161st, 25:40.5) and junior Morgan Hartline (163rd, 25:46) concluded the scoring.
Also competing for Marcellus were senior BryAnne Haas (173rd, 26:47.3) and sophomore Amy Steinkraus (176th, 27:56).
Division 3 boys’ race
Tim Kinney of Constantine finished 108th in the Division 3 boys’ race with a time of 17:42.2.
It was Kinney’s third consecutive appearance in the state finals.
