Rocket football team completes undefeated season
THREE RIVERS — The Three Rivers fifth and sixth grade Rocket football team coached by Mike McClain completed an undefeated season (6-0) Saturday with a thrilling 12-6 triumph over visiting Mattawan. The victory was assured when linebacker Andrew Brown, Jr. intercepted a desperation Mattawan heave in the closing seconds. The win closed out a perfect season that also included victories over Delton, Paw Paw, Otsego, Vicksburg, and Plainwell.
On the season, Three Rivers was paced by a powerful backfield led by quarterback Angelo Hausmannis, tailback Brown, and fullback R’Von Williamson. Running primarily from the I-formation and the wishbone this trio, along with tight-end/H-back Donzell McKinney, accounted for the majority of Wildcat scores. Hausmanis finished the year with nine passing touchdowns as he took advantage of opposing defenses stacked to stop the run. Tackles Marco Hernandez and Ethan Pearson protected Hausmanis while pivot man DJ Bell and guards Nathan Vergauwen and Jeremiah Detwiler cleared the interior. Ends Drew McClain and Evan Lukeman supplemented the ground game and proved to be dangerous receivers.
