Three Rivers freshmen spikers capture league championship
PAW PAW — The Three Rivers freshman volleyball team participated in the Wolverine Conference Tournament at Paw Paw Saturday.
Eight teams competed and the tournament consisted of pool play with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semifinals.
“I knew we would have to play through some tough teams, but our girls were disciplined and ready for the challenge,” said Three Rivers freshman coach Don Zabonick.
Three Rivers started the day beating Paw Paw 25-9, 25-8, then lost to Plainwell 18-25, 12-25.
But the Lady Cats came together in their third match and beat Allegan 25-16, 25-11.
“The girls rallied together. We knew we had to play hard, run our plays and avoid mistakes,” Zabonick said.
Three Rivers finished second in its pool with a record of 4-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Three Rivers faced the No. 1 team from Pool A, which was Vicksburg, and defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-21, 25-13.
Three Rivers faced Plainwell again in the championship and came out on top of the Lady Trojans 25-10, 25-22.
Kylee Nash served 11 straight points for Three Rivers in the first game against Plainwell. Karalyn Eldridge and Maddy Borst both added a couple of key kills for the Lady Cats.
Chelsea Jepsen had several key kills for Three Rivers in the second game. Borst, Eldridge and Caliah Brown added key kills and blocks.
Zabonick also singled out the defensive play of Emma Thatcher, Nash, Borst, Eldridge and Lizzie Bissett.
Three Rivers finished the tournament with a record of 8-2 and brought home a conference championship for the volleyball program.
Members of the team include Tori Brown, Eldridge, Thatcher, Bissett, Jepsen, Borst, Caliah Brown, Nash, Kaylee Paffhousen and Rachael Hatfield.
“I couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” Zabonick said.
