GALESBURG — Mendon’s volleyball team tuned up for postseason play next week with a three-game sweep of non-conference foe Galesburg-Augusta Thursday 25-21, 25-16, 25-17.
Mendon, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Michigan Volleyball Coaches Association state poll, finishes the regular season with an overall record of 37-8-7.
Leading the Mendon attack on the night was Kaley Smith with five aces and 17 digs. Megann Leighton contributed 16 kills and five blocks. Haley Kramer posted six kills. Hannah Duchene finished the match with six kills, five aces and a pair of blocks. Cassie Plummer had a great night setting the ball for Mendon with 27 assists.
“We’re now free to look ahead to the playoffs, which I know we’ve had an eye on all season,” said Mendon coach Bill Trenary, whose Lady Hornets have reached the Class D state quarterfinals the past two seasons.
Mendon hosts next week’s Class D district tournament. The Lady Hornets face Burr Oak on Wednesday.
Lady Chiefs sweep non-league foes
CLIMAX — White Pigeon’s volleyball team earned a pair of non-conference wins over Climax-Scotts Thursday and Three Oaks-River Valley on Tuesday.
The Lady Chiefs earned wins in both matches in three-straight games beating host Climax-Scotts 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 and visiting River Valley 25-14, 25-22, 25-8.
Against Climax-Scotts, Grace Keyer had two aces and 12 digs for White Pigeon. Lexi Larrison added two kills, two blocks and three digs. Madi Gremore contributed one assist, 10 kills, four aces and 18 digs. Courtney Delarye had one block and one ace. Sidney Mishler chipped in eight kills and a pair of digs. Angela Gibson had one kill and nine digs. Claycee West tossed in six kills, two blocks, two aces and two digs. Shanna Hagner finished with 16 assists, one kill, two blocks and three digs. Maria Garceran had 10 digs for the Lady Chiefs.
In the victory over River Valley, White Pigeon got one assist, a block and one ace from Delarye. West had 10 kills, one block, seven digs and one ace. Gremore posted 11 kills, three aces and four digs. Keyer had nine digs and an ace. Larrison contributed two kills and a block. Mishler finished with two kills and 14 digs. Hagner accumulated 16 assists, one kill, one ace and three digs and Garceran had one kill.
Marcellus wins own Dig Pink Quad
MARCELLUS — The Marcellus volleyball team dominated its own “Dig Pink Quad” Tuesday.
Tony Hooley’s Wildcats earned consecutive wins over Kalamazoo Home School 25-13, 25-23, Kalamazoo Heritage 25-21, 25-15 and Howardsville Christian 25-5, 25-14.
Mackenzie Buck had 12 kills, one ace and five blocks for Marcellus, now 27-13-7. Brianna Singer totaled 12 kills, one ace, six digs and one block. Sam Daugherty added two assists, two kills and one ace. Ellie Holmes had two aces and one dig. Madison Fisher chipped in 35 assists, three kills, two aces, nine digs and two blocks. Grace Mihills had 10 kills, three aces, one dig and two blocks. Jade Sibley finished with three assists, five kills, seven aces, one dig and one block. Chey Goodenough had one ace and five digs. Olivia Wildes added one kill and 20 digs. Aleyna Hutson had seven kills, three aces and five digs. Destinee Buck had six kills and three digs. Kristina Wildes pitched in two kills, two aces and one dig.
“It felt good to get a few matches in the win column again. We had become good at turning potential wins into splits and losses the last few weeks,” Hooley said.
“Our assistant coach Jen Fisher organized and worked hard to make the cancer awareness quad a huge success. Several parents, players and other individuals put a lot of effort into making this event special in memory of those lost due to the disease, those who have survived and in particular our own assistant coach Bill Curtis.”
