Skate Dreams a safe place for youths to have fun

Facility holds grand opening, official ribbon cutting ceremony

THREE RIVERS — Together, co-owners Stephanie Brumfield and Zyrone Sanders have refurbished the old Maple Land Skating Rink into a facility where youth in the community can come and enjoy themselves in a safe environment.

Skate Dreams was able to open its doors for a special Grand Opening back on Sunday, June 19 when youth from the community were invited free of charge.

Sanders said the opening was delayed a few months due to problems with the facility’s roof.

“Every time we got ready to open there was roof leakage from rain or melting ice and because it was presswood flooring, that caused the floor to start warping,” Sanders said.

The facility received almost a complete renovation, including installation of new gutters, roof and flooring.

Brumfield estimates that over 300 attended the grand opening which included free admission and food, and an open skate along with a fireworks display outside at the end of the event.

Skate Dreams will be open for two sessions on Fridays with a family open skate from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a teen skate from 7:30-10:30 p.m. An adult skate will also be held from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $10 with a $3 skate rental.

New attractions have also been put in place, along with concessions. Five 81-inch big screen TVs have been added facing the rink, along with popular gaming systems such Xbox 1 and PlayStation 5. Eventually the facility will also offer a separate room for birthday parties or business events.

“We just want to be able to give kids a place to go that is safe. Somewhere they can come skate and be part of a welcoming environment without any negative behavior,” Sanders said.

Skate Dreams has been in the planning stages since October of 2021.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility with the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce took place on Friday, June 24.
