No charges in deadly dog attack

Dog will be put to rest

CENTREVILLE — St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough has released a statement regarding the dog attack on Oct. 23 that killed Kiyana McNeal, 4, of Sturgis.
“I have had the opportunity to review all of the information regarding the death and have concluded that there is not sufficient evidence to authorize charges in this matter,” he said. “There is absolutely zero evidence to show that this dog had any aggressive tendencies whatsoever or that there was anything that the previous owner knew and did not disclose.
“This young child was left unsupervised with a new animal and something triggered the dog to attack. If anything this is an incident where a parent turned away for a short period of time, like all parents do, and this horrific and tragic event occurred. My prayers go out to everyone involved, especially the young victim’s loved ones.
“The dog involved in the incident is scheduled to be put to rest at the St. Joseph County Animal Control Office.”
