Suspect escapes standoff, police actively searching

THREE RIVERS — Three Rivers police are searching for a suspect who escaped a standoff situation that lasted for several hours Saturday night and Sunday morning.

According to the Three Rivers Police Department, police were called to an apartment at Riverside Apartments and Townhomes in the 1200 block of Hov Aire Drive around 5:33 p.m. Saturday. Police claim they located a wanted suspect, who barricaded themselves inside the apartment of a third party.

Officers from TRPD and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department reportedly attempted to negotiate with the suspect, and because the suspect was reportedly barricaded in the apartment, the St. Joseph County Special Response Team was activated.

A search warrant was eventually obtained for the residence, and “numerous” attempts to contact the suspect were made. After no response, entry was made into the building. Once inside, however, police discovered the suspect had reportedly broken through several walls to adjoining apartments and was able to escape.

Police say the suspect is not a threat to the general public at this time.
