Bulldogs capture BCS Blue Divisional cross country titles
CENTREVILLE — There was lots to celebrate in Centreville Tuesday as the Bulldogs boys’ and girls’ cross country teams claimed titles in the BCS League’s Blue Division.
Rob Collins’ Bulldogs won both meets in the final league jamboree of the season on its home course.
“Our kids stepped up,” Collins said. “Each of them knew where they were in the race. They knew what they had to do to score and had their spots picked out on the course. They attacked on all the blind corners out of sight of the other teams. Our times are starting to come down and I think pretty soon our kids are going to be dangerous.”
Centreville captured first place in the boys’ meet with 45 points. White Pigeon finished second with 74 followed by Howardsville Christian (77), Three Oaks River Valley (89), Cassopolis (117), St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic (139) and New Buffalo (148).
Sophomore Dylan Jergens of Howardsville Christian was the individual winner in the boys’ race.
Jergens, a state qualifier last year as a freshman, toured the 5,000-meter (3.1 mile) course in a time of 17:07.71.
The top seven individual finishers are named to the All-Division BCS Blue team.
Parker DePalma of New Buffalo finished second in 17:24.72.
Justus Chupp from Centreville claimed third place in 18:02.02 followed by Howardsville’s Jordan Rose (fourth, 18:24.09), River Valley’s Jarod Volstorf (fifth, 18:30.08), White Pigeon’s Cole Shafer (sixth, 18:50.62) and Centreville’s Coletin Gascho (seventh, 19:28.49).
